Temple Climbs to #22 in College Football Playoff Ranking
12.1.15 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – In the final College Football Playoff (CFP) Ranking before this Sunday's Bowl Selection Show, Temple comes in at #22, matching its highest position in the poll in program history.
Temple has been ranked in the CFP Poll all but one week this year. On November 3, the Owls made their debut at #22 in the respected poll's initial showing. Temple remained there for another week before dropping out after a loss to USF. Following a 31-12 win over #21 Memphis, Temple returned to the polls again.
As of this Sunday, Temple also ranked #20 in the esteemed Associated Press Poll and #21 in the Amway USA Today Coaches Poll. Both positions were the Owls best of the season.
Only two schools outside of the Power 5 conferences, Houston at #19 and Navy at #23, join Temple in the Top 25. The Cougars will host Temple in the American Athletic Conference Championship game this Saturday (12:00 noon ET on ABC). Indications are that the winner of this game would play in a New Year's Six Bowl - either the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on December 31 or the Vizio Fiesta Bowl on January 1.
Beginning in 2014, the top four teams in the CFP rankings compete in a bracket style format for a chance to play for the national championship. This year's semifinals (the Capital One Orange Bowl and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic) are on New Year's Eve, with the winners meeting in the College Football Playoff Championship. The 2016 CFP National Championship is slated for Jan. 11 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
In addition to determining the semifinal bowls, the selection committee is responsible for seeding teams in the New Year's Six bowls. After the top four teams are assigned to the semifinal sites, the committee fills the remaining bowl slots according to the CFP rankings and bowl agreements between conferences.
A talented group of high-integrity individuals with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors, comprise the selection committee. Members of the committee are: Jeff Long (chair), Barry Alvarez, Mike Gould, Kirby Hocutt, Tom Jernstedt, Bobby Johnson, Tom Osborne, Dan Radakovich, Condoleezza Rice, Mike Tranghese, Steve Wieberg and Tyrone Willingham.
The selection committee will prepare one more ranking this season, the final set on Selection Day, Sunday, December 6.
