Women's Basketball Wins Big Over Sacred Heart

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team out-scored Sacred Heart 27-10 in the third quarter, en route to a huge 92-62 win over the Pioneers on Wednesday night at McGonigle Hall. The win lifts the Owls back to .500 at 4-4, while Sacred Heart falls to 1-7 on the season.
Four players scored in double-figures on the night, including a game-high 24 points from sophomore Alliya Butts, who tied a career-best with six threes. Butts scored 19 of her 24 points in the second half, and also added six assists and a game-high six steals. Sophomore Tanaya Atkinson notched her first double-double of the season (and the sixth of her career) scoring 18 points and picking up a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Erica Covile ended the night with 16 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Donnaizha Fountain scored 13 points and pulled down six boards. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald was the engineer of the offense, dishing out a career-best 11 assists, while also adding seven points.
The Owls shot a season-high 52.1% from the field (38-of-73) and 50% from three-point range (12-of-24). Temple also hit season-highs with 28 assists and 15 steals, while out-rebounding the Pioneers, 47-21, Temple's largest rebound margin this season.
The Owls led by 14 points after the first quarter, thanks to strong defense and a 63.2% shooting percentage (12-19). Temple raced out to a 6-2 advantage, before SHU cut to to 8-4. The Owls extended its lead to 11 points, as Fountain connected for five points on a 9-0 Owl run to make it 15-4. The Pioneers hit threes on back-to-back posessions, to cut it to 17-10, before Temple ended the frame with a 9-2 surge to lead, 26-12.
Temple extended its advantage to 18 points (36-18) early in the second, as Berger nailed her second three of the game at 7:30. From there, Sacred Heart scored seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to 36-15 with 4:52 remaining. Temple halted the Pioneer run with five-straight, including a three from Butts to make it 41-25, but Sacred Heart closed the quarter with a 7-2 run to make it an 11-point game (43-32) at the break.
The third quarter proved to be the difference maker, as Temple out-scored Sacred Heart 27-10 in the frame, turning an 11-point advantage into a 28-point cushion. The Owls were 10-of-18 from the field (55.6%) and connected on 5-of-7 from long-range (71.4%) to aid the surge. The Owls didn't allow back-to-back buckets from the Pioneers for the entire 10-minute quarter, and ended the stanza on a 19-3 run, to take a 70-42 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Sacred Heart kept pace with the Owls, as each team connected for three from beyond-the-arc. The Temple lead was too great, however, as the Pioneers couldn't get any closer than a 28-point deficit. The Owls had built a 35-point edge, going up 92-55, before Sacred Heart closed the game on a 7-0 run, setting the final score to 92-62.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday, heading to the Bronx to take on Fordham at 2:00 p.m.
