PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team used a late surge to pick up a 69-58 win against Tulane on a "Play4Kay" game at McGonigle Hall on Tuesday night. The Owls shot 47.4% from the field and forced 21 turnovers to get by the third-place Green Wave. Temple improves to 9-5 in the American, 13-14 overall, while Tulane's record now stands at 10-5 in conference play, 19-7 overall.
Senior Tyonna Williams shot 71.4% from the field to lead a balanced offense for Temple. Williams topped the team with 16 points, while also adding three assists and a block. Freshman Alliya Butts finished with 13 points, five assists, and three steals, while classmate Tanaya Atkinson had 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald had nine points with a career-best six steals, while also tying a career-high with seven assists. Rounding out the box score, junior Erica Covile had seven points, six rebounds, and four steals, while sophomore Safiya Martin had seven points and five rebounds.
Temple scored the first points of the game, a Butts three, but Tulane rattled off a 12-4 run to take a 12-7 lead with 15:21 on the clock. Temple got the deficit back down to one (12-11) on buckets from Butts and Atkinson, but Tulane got hot from three, pushing the lead back to six points on two occasions.
Williams and a stingy Temple defense then keyed a 13-5 run for the Owls, putting the hosts on top 24-22 with 7:37 remaining in the stanza. Williams had 11 points for Temple during the surge, including connecting on three straight threes. Tulane briefly tied the game on a pair of Jamie Kaplan free throws, but another Temple run, this one 9-2, pushed the Owls to a 33-26 advantage with 5:13 on the clock.
Tulane used a 6-2 run to get within three (33-30), but Temple closed out the half with the edge, taking a 37-32 lead into the locker room. Williams' 16 first half points led all players, while Atkinson had 10 at the break for the Owls. Both teams hovered around 48% shooting, but the Owls forced 16 Tulane turnovers to account for the lead. The Green Wave saw eight points from Tiffany Dale and seven from Kaplan in the half.
An 11-0 run for Tulane put the visitors on top early in the second half, with the Green Wave converting on three early Temple turnovers. With the Tulane surge, the Owls found themselves behind by six, scoring their first point of the half on a Martin free throw with 15:33 on the clock.
After the Owls got on the board in the half, a Danielle Blagg lay-up put Tulane up by seven (45-38) with 14:27. However, Temple orchestrated a 10-2 run, backed by threes from Covile and freshman Khadijah Berger to get back on top, 48-47 with 12:06 to play.
Tulane regained the lead with a bucket from Kaplan before the Owls got back-to-back threes from Butts, including one as the shot clock expired, to push the lead to 54-49 with 7:43 remaining. The Green Wave responded with a 6-4 run, including four from Blagg, to cut the Owls lead to 58-55 with 3:57 to play.
Leading by just three, Temple closed out the game with a commanding 11-3 run, to seal the 69-58 victory. Fitzgerald and Martin combined for nine in the final 3:28 of play, cementing the win for the Owls.
Temple's win avenged a 77-63 loss to Tulane just 10 days ago. In tonight's game, the Green Wave were led by Blagg's game high 17 points, while Tiffany Dale notched a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Owls next head to Tampa, Fla. to take on second-place USF on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Bulls grabbed the first meeting between the teams this season, a 70-58 game at McGonigle Hall.
Temple wore pink uniforms for the game in honor of WBCA's "Play4Kay" initiative, benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Coach Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.
