BIG EAST Awards - Feb. 17
BIG EAST Attacker Of The Week
Mallory Schonk, Vanderbilt, Jr., A
Schonk led a Commodore offense which outscored their opponents by a 4-to-1 margin through the first two games by totaling 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. Schonk's seven goals came off just nine shots, while the junior also added eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Following wins over Kennesaw State (24-1) and Liberty (20-10), Vandy is 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
BIG EAST Midfielder Of The Week
Emily Anderson, Connecticut, Sr., M
Anderson stuffed the stat sheet in the Huskies' narrow setback to RV/RV James Madison on Sunday, totaling five goals, four ground balls, six draw controls and four caused turnovers. The goals and caused turnovers matched the game highs against the Dukes, who now rank 20th in the nation. Anderson scored three of the game's final seven goals as the Huskies rallied from down by as many as nine before falling by four.
BIG EAST Defensive Player Of The Week
Caroline Fitzgerald, Florida, So., D
Fitzgerald helped lead Florida to the second-ever shutout in program history on Saturday against Michigan. In all three games this season, the sophomore has been tasked with marking the opposing team's top scoring threat, including No. 2/2 North Carolina's Aly Messinger, who totaled 67 goals in 2014. Fitzgerald limited Messinger to just one tally in the Gators' setback to the Tar Heels. She held Jacksonville's Brittney Orashen to zero points and the Wolverine's Jess Angerman also without a point – Angerman led Michigan with 44 points in 2014.
BIG EAST Rookie Of The Week
Grace Nolan, Connecticut, Fr., M
In her collegiate debut against RV/RV James Madison, Nolan totaled four points on two goals and two assists. The rookie's two scores were off just two shots, while she also snagged three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Weekly Honor Roll
Carly Demato, Temple, So., A
The Owls went 2-0 in overtime games to start the season and Demato played a major factor in that. The sophomore notched her third career hat trick against Saint Joseph'son Saturday, with the third goal being the game winner for Temple. Against UMBC earlier in the week, Demato had a goal, ground ball and a caused turnover, while ripping three shots.
Shannon Gilroy, Florida, Sr., M
Despite being limited due to illness against Michigan, Gilroy still posted incredible numbers over the opening week of play, totaling nine goals off 16 shots and adding three assists. The senior tallied 11 draw controls and three ground balls as well. She moved into second place on the Gators' all-time goals list with 191.
Nicole Graziano, Florida, R-Jr., M
In a 2-1 opening week for the Gators, Graziano, who missed all of 2014 due to injury, totaled eight points off six goals and two assists, adding 10 draw controls and a team-high six ground balls. The redshirt-junior shined against the toughest competition with two goals, two assists, three ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers against No. 2/2 North Carolina.
