PHILADELPHIA- After sweeping Delaware last weekend, the women's tennis team defeated UMBC, 4-3 on February 7.
The team was swept in doubles play, with UMBC picking up the first point of the match. However, singles was where the Owls really kicked up the heat. In another stellar performance, freshman Alina Abdurakhimova took the first flight in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, against UMBC's Madlena Kurasz; this extended Abdurakhimova's streak to four consecutive matches with straight set victories. For the 2-1 lead, freshman Yana Khon won the fourth flight in straight sets as well, defeating Hanna Victorsson 6-3, 6-4. At the fifth flight, freshman Monet Stuckey-Willis took straight sets victories against Laura Ambrozic, 6-1, 6-1.
While the freshmen made the score 3-1 for the Owls, Anais Nussaume battled at the third flight in order to take the winning point for Temple, after defeating UMBC's Isabel Aldunate, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-2.
Head coach Steve Mauro was extremely pleased with the way that the team fought to keep the match close, but ultimately take the victory.
"The girls played really hard against a good UMBC team. I was really happy with how the girls came out, played their singles matches, and fought hard," said Mauro. "We had some really exciting matches and I think the freshmen played extremely well. All six matches were tough, but the girls persevered and I was really happy with the outcome."
The Owls (4-2) will travel to Manasquan, N.J. tomorrow to take on Rutgers at 2:00 p.m.
