PHILADELPHIA - Two big road games are on the slate for Temple lacrosse this week, as the 6-1 Owls look to continue their best start to a season in 17 years. Temple will head to Rutgers for a 6:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 11, and then to #19 Delaware for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, March 14.Â
Headlines
• The Owls have gone 6-1 to start the 2015 season, matching the best start for the program since the 1998 team also started at 6-1. With one more win, Temple would have its best start since 1997.
• When the BIG EAST Weekly Awards were announced Tuesday, Temple earned two of the four. Junior Nicole Tiernan was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week, while redshirt junior Jaqi Kakalecik was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
• Temple has proven its ability to win close games already this season. Three of its wins have been by a single goal, with two of those coming in overtime. Two other wins have been by two goals in regulation.
• Two of the Owls' next four games are against top-20 opponents. They will travel to #19 Delaware on Saturday, and will face #5 Florida in their BIG EAST opener at home on March 28. Between those two contests, Temple will play Denver at home on March 20, a team receiving votes in the poll.
• The Owls have been led offensively by Tiernan with 17 goals and freshman attacker Nicole Barretta with 10 goals. Tiernan scored a career-high five goals in Temple's 10-9 win at Wagner on March 4, and has already notched three hat tricks this season.
• Kakalecik has recorded all six of Temple's wins in goal, and tied her career high with 10 saves in the Owls' win at Iona. She made seven saves at Wagner including a big one with just over a minute remaining to preserve the win.
• The Owls lead the all-time series against Rutgers 13-6, but the last loss was a big one. In the final game of the 2014 season against then-BIG EAST members Rutgers, the Owls lost a must-win contest to the Scarlet Knights by a single goal, 11-10. That loss kept Temple out of the BIG EAST Tournament.
• Junior Maddie McTigue, a 2014 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, is a team co-captain this year for a second consecutive season. She is joined in the role by senior defender Carli Fitzgerald and junior defender Kara Stroup.
• Temple's second game of the week takes the Owls to region rival Delaware. The Blue Hens are currently 5-1 and ranked 19th in the IWLCA Poll. Delaware narrowly leads the all-time series against the Owls, 14-13, and has won the last two meetings.
