PHILADELPHIA - Temple lacrosse will look for its sixth straight win and ninth overall when the Owls host Denver on Friday, March 20 at 4:00 p.m. at Geasey Field. With a record of 8-1 overall, Temple is off to its best start for the program in 18 years. The Pioneers are 5-2 overall and currently receiving votes in both the IWLCA Division I poll and Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Top 20, while the Owls are also receiving votes in the latter.
The 1997 Owls also started at 8-1 before losing a second game. With one more win, the Owls would match their best start in 26 years, since the 1989 team started at 9-1. The Owls' impressive record now includes a win over a nationally ranked team, as they took down #19 Delaware on the road by a score of 11-6 on March 14. In Temple's other game last week, they got revenge for a one-goal loss at Rutgers a year ago, this time beating the Scarlet Knights 11-10.
Temple junior Nicole Tiernan has exploded for 26 goals so far this season, with nine of those coming in Temple's two games last week. She scored a career-high six goals in the Owls' 11-10 win at Rutgers, and scored three more in their 11-6 win at #19 Delaware. Tiernan, who now has five hat tricks for the season, was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for a second week in a row after her impressive performances. She ranks second among all players in the BIG EAST with 2.89 goals per game, and is the BIG EAST leader with 12 free position goals. Among all players in NCAA Division I, Tiernan's 26 goals currently rank 10th.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik, last week's BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, recorded a career-high 13 saves to help the Owls win at #19 Delaware on March 14. Kakalecik added an impressive six ground balls and three caused turnovers to her career numbers in the win. "The defense and Jaqi were just phenomenal," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "She was outstanding and really just stifling in the cage for us, and also key in her ability outside the cage to get ground balls, control our clears and really set the tone for the whole team."
The Pioneers are 5-2 this season, led by Jill Remenapp who has 12 goals and 14 assists, while Kiki Boone has a team-leading 14 goals and an assist. This is the second meeting between the teams and first in Philadelphia. The Owls lost 12-9 at Denver last season in the first match-up.
Friday's game will be the last for Temple in its non-conference schedule this season. The Owls will open BIG EAST play at home on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. against #6/7 Florida.
