Lacrosse Has Win Streak Snapped by #8 Florida
3.28.15 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - The eighth-ranked Florida Gators proved too much for Temple lacrosse on Saturday afternoon, locking down defensively and using a big second half to put the game out of reach in a 17-3 loss for the Owls. Temple (8-2, 0-1) had its five-game win streak snapped, while Florida improves to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference.
Two-time All-American Shannon Gilroy led Florida with four goals and an assist, while the Gators go three goals apiece from Carly Ross and Devon Schneider.
Temple's scoring came from three different players as Kathryn Skahan, Megan Tiernan and Megan Pinkerton each put one in the cage.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik made seven first-half saves, but just two in the second half as Florida found its way through the Owls' defense. Ten of the Gators' goals were scored in the second half.
Temple kept Florida from getting too much on offense early on, tying the game in the fifth minute at 1-1 and holding the Gators to two goals in the first 10 minutes. Pinkerton's goal with under a minute left in the first half but the Owls within three at 5-2, but Gilroy scored twice in the final 24 seconds of the half to give Florida a 7-2 lead at the break.
Skahan's 11th goal of the season in the fourth minute of the second half made it 8-3, but the Owls were unable to score again. Florida's starting goalkeeper Mary-Sean Wilcox played just under 55 minutes and made three saves, while Olivia Cole made one in the final minutes of the game for Florida.
Temple will play its next two BIG EAST games on the road, starting with a 2:00 p.m. (EST) contest at Vanderbilt on Saturday, April 4.
