3.6.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Senior Day is always special for Temple men's basketball, but this year it is extra special for this class as the Owls host defending NCAA champion UConn at the Liacouras Center for a Saturday showdown. The game will also be the team's annual "white out" game. Tip time for the nationally-televised tilt is 2:00 pm (ESPN2/1210 AM WPHT).
Temple (21-9, 12-5 American), which opened its conference season with a thrilling 57-53 overtime win at UConn (12/31), is coming off a 70-56 win at East Carolina. Â The victory enabled the Owls to clinch a first-round bye to next week's American Athletic Conference tournament and stay tied for third place in the league standings with Cincinnati (21-9, 12-5 American).
Senior guard Will Cummings, one of four senior players to be honored in a pregame ceremony Saturday, led the way against the Pirates with a 16-point, 7-rebound, 6-assist game. Â The Owls' co-captain has led the way all season, topping the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) and assists (4.2 apg) while leading the conference in steals (2.0 spg).
Junior guard Quenton DeCosey (12.2 ppg) and senior guard Jesse Morgan (11.6 ppg) also top double figures for head coach Fran Dunphy's Owls while junior forward Jaylen Bond (8.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg) leads the conference in rebounding. Â Junior center Devontae Watson (2.4 ppg) rounds out the starting five.
Sophomore guard Josh Brown (6.5 ppg) and freshman forward Obi Enechionyia (4.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg) headline a deep Owl bench that includes redshirt sophomore forward Daniel Dingle (4.0 ppg), sophomore forward Mark Williams (3.7 ppg) and junior Devin Coleman (3.6 ppg).
UConn (17-12, 10-7 American) had its three-game win streak snapped Thursday with a home loss to Memphis (54-53). Â The loss spoiled the team's Senior Night festivities.Â
The Huskies are led by senior guard Ryan Boatright, who tops the team in scoring (17.6 ppg), assists (4.2 apg) and steals (1.4 spg). Freshman Daniel Hamilton also averages double figures (10.9 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg). Sophomores Rodney Purvis (10.3 ppg) and Amida Brimah (10.2 ppg, 96 blocks) also score in double figures.
UConn leads the series 6-4, and had won the five meetings prior to Temple's OT win in December. Â Â
Cummings will be joined in the pregame Senior Ceremony by teammates Morgan, Jimmy McDonnell and Nick Pendergast as well as managers Matt Cummings, Matt Kleinfelter, Brittany Lewis and Emma Purcell. Â
