Lacrosse Wins Third Straight Game, 10-8 at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Behind the first career hat trick for Kathryn Skahan and a career-tying 10 saves from Jaqi Kakalecik, Temple lacrosse improved to 6-1 overall with a 10-8 win at Iona (2-3) on Friday afternoon. Skahan set the tone early, recording all three of her goals in the first eight minutes.
"Kathryn was aggressive, sharp and right on target with her shots," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen, "and she really helped set the momentum early on which was important."
The 10th goal for the Owls was scored by Rachel Schwaab with over 14 minutes left, and both teams were scoreless in the remaining time in a defensive battle.
"This game was very similar to our win at Wagner the other day," said Rosen, "in terms of being a real battle for ground balls and draw controls. Overall I think we had control of the game the entire time, but we created some scoring opportunities that we didn't finish. We have to learn how to close on those and get more separation."
Iona goalkeeper Blaire Nathanson did well against the Owls' attack, coming up with 17 saves as Temple out-shot Iona 32-25. Kakalecik's save percentage was impressive as well, with her total of 10 tying her career high in a game.
"Jaqi is already a very good goalkeeper and is learning how to get better each game, so if she can keep finding that next level we'll be in great shape," said Rosen. "She got stronger through the game today and we were able to stall with the ball in her stick. We are fortunate to have a keeper who can possess the ball in pressure situations."
Skahan and Nicole Tiernan combined for four goals to give Temple a 4-1 lead less than eight minutes in, but Iona caught up at 4-4. Krissy Gallivan stopped the Gaels' run with a free position goal near the midway point of the first half, and Nicole Barretta added to the lead just past the 13-minute mark.
The Owls' 6-4 lead held for 10 minutes down the stretch of the first half, until Megan Pinkerton scored on an assist from Macie Hauck for a 7-4 lead at 2:53. Iona scored the final goal of the half and the Owls led 7-5 at the break.
The Gaels' made it a one-goal game three times in the second half, but Temple always had an answer. Tiernan and Barretta both scored their second goals of the game to help hold off Iona, and Schwaab's goal at 14:21 gave the Owls' their 10-8 lead that they would go on to hold for the remainder.
Tiernan finished with a game-best six ground balls and three caused turnovers in addition to her two goals, and has now scored multiple goals in each of the last four games for Temple.
Temple has two games left of a four-game road swing, and will be back in action at Rutgers for a 6:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 11.
