Women's Tennis Takes Down Akron, 5-2

PHILADELPHIA – After splitting road matches against East Carolina and Hampton, the women's tennis team returned home to capture a 5-2 win over Akron.
Doubles was a battle to the last match, but the Owls ultimately took the point. Akron's Martina Zerbola and Sophia Geier took down Alina Abdurakhimova and Yana Khon at the first flight, 6-2, while Anais Nussaume and Monet Stuckey-Willis led a charge at the second flight to defeat Karolina Maksimova and Ariadna Blinova, 6-2. Temple came out with the 6-3 victory at the third flight, as Rebecca Breland and Dina Karina defeated Olga Shkundina and Madison Cohen to take the point.
In singles play, the Owls were quick to take the 4-0 lead over Akron. Stuckey-Willis claimed a victory at the third flight with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Shkundina. Nussaume followed suit as she took down Cohen at the fourth flight, 6-0, 6-2. Aburakhimova clinched the victory for the Owls, defeating Maksimova at the first flight, 6-3, 6-1. Khon also picked up a 6-3 6-4 victory over Zerbola at the second flight.
Head coach Steve Mauro was very happy with how his team performance against a top team from the MAC.
"It was a strong team effort from the girls tonight. Akron is one of the top teams in their conference and we were happy to get a win against them," said Mauro. "The girls performed well in singles, especially in flights one through four. In doubles, everyone contributed and everyone played really smart tennis."
Mauro has also been very pleased with the way the team has performed so far this season, even with their crazy schedule.
"I've been really happy with the way the girls have been playing," said Mauro. "They've been playing a lot of tennis and it's a busy schedule so I know the girls are really happy to get a win against a good team."
The Owls (11-4, 0-2 The American) will travel to Lehigh on March 11 to take on Mountain Hawks.
