Temple University Walks A Mile For Sexual and Gender Violence Awareness
4.1.15 | Football, Outreach
PHILADELPHIA - Joining over 260 other participants, members of the Temple football team slipped on their heels for this year's Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Every year, college students around the country participate in the walk to raise awareness for sexual and gender violence.
This is the third year that head coach Matt Rhule has spoken to those in attendance and encouraging them to end assaults, which are said to happen to one in every four or five college students.
"So many people who engage in these acts that make women feel unsafe and make women not want to walk down the street would never do that to their sister, their mother, their daughter," said Rhule. "We would fight for the women that we know and love. But it takes so much more of a man to fight for the women we don't know and love."
Defensive back Will Hayes has been a participant in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes for the last three years and thinks those on Temple's campus should be involved with the walk to see things from another point of view.
"I think it's important for people to participate so they can be aware of what's going on in the world," said Hayes. "A lot of times, women have to go through a lot of things that men don't and I think it's important for people to know what's going on."
Rhule urged participants to create a safer environment for the women in their lives and for those on the Temple campus.
"Whatever you do, you're not going to change the world here to today, but you can change one small space of it. We can make our place that much safer," said Rhule. "We can make sure the women we know and the women that we don't know who walk through our place, our campus, our dorm, our classroom, feel safe and loved, and know when something happens to them, they have somewhere to turn."
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes was created in 2001 by Frank Baird to give "men the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their courage and commitment to preventing sexualized violence," as stated on the organization's website.
