Lacrosse Travels to Vanderbilt for BIG EAST Match-Up Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - Temple lacrosse will face its second new BIG EAST member in a row this weekend, as the Owls (8-2, 0-1) travel to Vanderbilt (3-8, 0-2) for a 2:00 p.m. (EST) contest on Saturday, April 4. Both teams are looking for their first conference win, with Temple recently having a five-game win streak snapped by #8 Florida, and the Commodores having lost eight straight to an impressive lineup of opponents.
The Owls' 8-2 start is the program's best since 1998. That squad went 9-2 before losing a third game, and went on to finish at 14-5 and advance to the NCAA Semifinals. Temple had won five straight games before suffering a 17-3 setback to #8 Florida in its BIG EAST opener last Saturday. The Owls have been led offensively by junior midfielder Nicole Tiernan with 26 goals, freshman attacker Nicole Barretta with 11 goals and junior attacker Kathryn Skahan with 11 goals. Tiernan scored a career-high six goals in Temple's 11-6 win at #19 Delaware on March 14, and has already notched five hat tricks this season. She ranks fourth among all players in the BIG EAST with 2.60 goals per game, and is the BIG EAST leader with 12 free position goals.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week once so far this season, and recorded a career-high 13 saves to help the Owls take down nationally ranked Delaware.
The Owls lead Vanderbilt 1-0 in the all-time series with a 20-7 home win on April 15, 1996. Vanderbilt started the season at 3-0 but has since played an impressive schedule and lost its last eight straight. All but the most recent loss to Georgetown came against nationally ranked teams, including a narrow, 12-11 overtime loss at #12 Penn. Seven Commodores have reached double figures in goals this season, led by Mallory Schonk with 22 goals, Alexa Kunowsky with 20 and Jill Doherty with 19.
