Women's Tennis Joins Record Books with 7-0 Win over La Salle

4.12.15 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – The women's tennis team finished the regular season on a six-match winning streak and added themselves to the record books with a 7-0 shutout over La Salle on April 12. The Owls finished the season with 18 wins, which ties for the most wins in a season, along with the 1986-87 and 1988-89 teams.

"It was a great way to finish with a win in the last match of the season. We've had a great season, I'm really happy with the girls' record and their season," said Mauro. "With the support of our athletic department, athletic training and academic advising, they made our season so successful."

The doubles point was a sweep for Temple, as senior Rebecca Breland played in her last match as an Owl with doubles partner Monet Stuckey-Willis to defeat Jayla Smith and Cecile Johnson, 6-0 at the third flight. Minami Okajima and Mariana Bedon clinched the point with a 6-0 second-flight victory over Alexandra Santerelli and Jade Smith. Alina Abdurakhimova and Dina Karina also had a 6-2 win at the first flight over Caitlin Coelho and Celesta Smith.

Singles was another strong showing for the Owls. Anais Nussaume gave the team an early 2-0 lead, after she defeated Kathryn Thomas, 6-0, 6-0 at the sixth flight. Freshman Yana Khon continued with another 6-0, 6-0 victory at the fifth flight, taking down Jayla Smith. Karina moved the score to 4-0 and clinched the victory for Temple with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the fourth flight over Santerelli.

Abdurakhimova completed her freshman campaign with a 17-2 record at the first flight, after defeating Coelho, 6-0, 6-0. Okajima also picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at the fourth flight over Jade Smith, while freshman Stuckey-Willis added another victory to her record after taking a 6-0, 6-2 win at the second flight over C. Smith.

"It was a great effort today, the girls came out strong in doubles and continued their winning way into singles, not dropping a set," said Mauro. "I'm very pleased with the season and their effort this year. We're all looking forward to the conference tournament coming up on Wednesday."

The Owls (18-6, 0-4 The American) will travel to Tulsa for the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 15-18. Seeding for the championship will be announced this week.
