Women's Tennis Seeded Seventh In American Athletic Conference Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second year in a row, the women's tennis team has been seeded seventh at the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship, held on April 15-18 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus. The Owls will face eleventh-seeded Cincinnati at 1 p.m./12 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, April 15.

The ladies posted an 18-6 record, tying for the most number of wins in Temple history, but went 0-4 in conference play. Earlier this season, the Owls were defeated by Cincinnati, 6-1.

This season, the Owls were flanked with young talent. Freshmen Alina Abdurakhimova (18-5), Monet Stuckey-Willis (18-8), and Yana Khon (17-8) all made their mark on the tennis courts, while sophomores Dina Karina (12-9), Mariana Bedon (10-8), and Anais Nussuame (13-7) returned after strong rookie seasons. Lone junior Minami Okajima (6-5) and senior Rebecca Breland (7-6) continued to strengthen the team.

In doubles, Bedon and Okajima paired up for a 9-2 record, going 5-2 in the third flight. Toward the end of the season, Stuckey-Willis and Breland were paired together, posting a 4-0 doubles record; Stuckey-Willis also posted a 7-3 record with Nussaume, going 6-2 at the second flight and giving her a team-leading 16 doubles victories.

#28 Houston is the number one seed in the 11-team women's bracket and will receive a bye into Thursday's quarterfinals to play at 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT. The Cougars will face the winner of number 8 seed UConn and number nine East Carolina, who square off Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
 
The top half of the bracket also features a quarterfinal match Thursday at 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT between No. 4 SMU, who ranks #70 in the country, and No. 5 Memphis.
 
The number two seed in the women's bracket is #47 Tulane, as the Green Wave will play Thursday at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT against the winner of the Wednesday match between Temple and Cincinnati. #74 Tulsa is the number three seed and will play Thursday at 4 p.m./3 p.m. CT against the winner of Wednesday's 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT first-round match between number six UCF and number 11 USF.

Women's semifinal matches will take place Friday at 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT, with the championship final taking place Saturday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
