Football Volunteers At Race for the Cure
5.11.15 | Football, Outreach
PHILADELPHIA – On Mother's Day, Temple student-athletes cheerleaders and band members joined together to volunteer at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. For Temple football, both the race and the cause hold a strong meaning. Defensive end Brandon Chudnoff participated in the race with his mother Sylvita, who is a nine-year breast cancer survivor. Head coach Matt Rhule's mother, Gloria, is a survivor, as well, while his mother-in-law, Donna Nibert, passed away from the disease.
In an interview with Metro, Rhule said that cancer "is a common bond," as 14 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year, according to the Center for Disease Control, with about one in every eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer, according to breastcancer.org. For Chudnoff, participating in the race every year is something he's been doing since his mom was diagnosed in 2006, when her friends organized a group, and have done so ever since then.
Since Rhule became head coach in December, 2012, the football team has had a hand in helping out at the race, setting up tents and unloading trucks, and passing out water to runners as they crossed the finish line.
