Women's Rowing Races at The American Championships on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's rowing team will race at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday. The one-day event is being held on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. Time trials begin at 8:00 a.m., with finals starting at 11:10 a.m. A full schedule of racing is below.

The event features six boating categories with teams earning major points in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four races. Boats racing in the third varsity eight, second varsity four, and third varsity four, also have a chance to contribute to the team's overall point totals.

Head Coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski is excited for her team to participate in the event. "The American Athletic Conference is a very competitive conference, which is great for our sport and our program development," she noted. "We anticipate fast racing from around the country with some familiar faces in UConn and UCF, and also some new teams this year in Sacramento State and San Diego State, and we are looking forward to the challenge."

Last year, Temple finished fourth overall as a team, with a pair of novice boats earning medals. With the novice categories no longer contested at this year's event, Temple's successful novice eight rowers from this season have filled in other slots in varsity boats. The Owls will be looking to claim their first varsity American Athletic Conference medals on Sunday.

While Grzybowski thinks UCF and Tulsa are the favorites, she feels Temple is on its way up. "Based on the regular season results, UCF is the front runner and Tulsa has also posted some solid results this spring," she stated. "We are eager to continue climbing the ranks within the American, with the eventual goal of representing Temple at the NCAA Championships."
