Lacrosse Team's Adopted Sister Looks to Break Guinness World Record in Support of Childhood Cancer Research
5.27.15 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - There may be a new addition to the Guinness Book of World Records after June 6, in the form of an extremely large cup of lemonade. On that day, at Lindenwold Park in Lindenwold, N.J., Lily Adkins and her family are hosting their 7th Annual Lemonade Stand to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).
This year, the event is going by the name of Lily's BIG Grand Lemonade Stand and World Record Attempt for ALSF. The Adkins family is looking to raise between $14,000-$15,000 to support childhood cancer research, a cause close to their hearts. Lily, now nine years old, was diagnosed and treated for an ependymoma brain tumor when she was 14 months old.
Temple lacrosse adopted Lily through the Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ) Foundation in 2010. Lily's parents, Mike and Trish, are both Temple alums. Along with younger sister Chloe and younger brother Nicholas, the family attends as many Temple games as they can, and the connection between Lily and the lacrosse student-athletes remains a special one year after year.
The Adkins family decided to raise the bar with their 2015 event, and enlisted APR Plastic Fabricating Inc., Primus Builders Inc., Republic Refrigeration and other vendors to create a giant plastic cup capable of holding 1,502 gallons of lemonade (the previous Guinness record is 1,461.9). The cup, shown on the left, is approximately 10 feet high and six feet wide across the top. The lemonade for the giant cup is being generously supplied by Auntie Anne's.
Lily's BIG Grand Lemonade Stand will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 at Lindenwold Park. Temple's own Hooter the Owl will be on hand at the festivities, which will also include raffles, food, games, children's activities and performances by the Linden-Boro Cheerleaders and Mulford Dance Studio.
Alexandra "Alex" Scott was the founder of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in 2000, at the age of four. Before passing away at the age of eight from neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer, Alex and her family had already helped raise over $1 million to help find a cure. Supporters around the world continue to support her legacy through ALSF. The foundation's mission is to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures, and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.
