PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Temple women's rowing and volleyball teams were among the 21 squads recognized with 2014-15 American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards, as announced by Commissioner Mike Aresco on Tuesday. The awards are presented to the team with the highest collective grade-point average in each conference sport.
"This is a great award to receive as a team because it reflects on our philosophy at Temple that we do put academics first and we are looking for academic excellence," said head volleyball coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "It's a tribute to the hard work of all the student-athletes, with the guidance of their professors and the academic advisors at the Nancy and Donald Resnick Academic Support Center."
"This award is something we're really proud of," noted head women's rowing coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "We talk a lot of about how athletic and academic success are intricately linked and we put a high priority on it. We're also really fortunate at Temple to have excellent support from both the Nancy and Donald Resnick Academic Support Center and the University."
Temple was one of six conference institutions to have multiple teams honored. Memphis had five of its teams earn the honor to lead all institutions, while UCF had three teams chosen.
The selections are made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee. The winners were chosen based on the 2014-15 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
