The Man Who Helps Build Temple TUFF

PHILADELPHIA -- As the calendar flips to August, minds turn to the end of summer and the start of football season. For Jeremy Scott, head strength and conditioning coach for Temple football, this is only the next phase of his plan. His work has been going on for months to prepare the student-athletes to compete in 2015. With expectations high and eyes set on the American Athletic Conference's inaugural championship game in December, lifting and running programs were conducted throughout the spring and summer semesters.

Both Scott and head trainer Al Bellamy were pleased with the efforts and results of their programs. The Owls are looking to improve upon last year's 6-6 record and saw the offseason as the time to build that foundation for a better season. Head Coach Matt Rhule has made no secret he's looking to re-establish the run game this season, what he identifies as "Temple Football" and what drives success in the Northeast once the weather turns cold. Bellamy noted the commitment to the weight room should pay off as Temple goes later into games. The training pushed the student athletes' limits and created some adversity "so when it happens in the season, they're able to handle it, and compete, and get better as a team."

Scott focuses on the overall performance of the student-athletes which extends beyond their time at the football facilities on 10th and Diamond. Getting the most out of training sessions requires proper hydration, nutrition, and sleep. Football fans in Philadelphia are used to hearing about these precepts from Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. While Temple may not get the same publicity for it, Scott and his team have been preaching the same gospel for years. Players get individualized programs to provide parameters for eating, hydrating, and getting their rest.

These programs and months of training will need to carry the Owls through an intense season. The lateness of Labor Day in 2015 means the team will play 12 games in just 13 weeks, including three shorter weeks due to weeknight games on national television. The Owls have their bye week in late September before nine straight weeks with games, including seven conference match-ups and the October 31st visit from #11 Notre Dame. Scott acknowledged the challenges those bring but is confident in the team's performance, pointing to keeping the team in a rhythm. Once the season kicks off, his focus shifts to keep conditioning without losing any strength during the practice and game schedule. "We're pretty aggressive in how we train and I don't look at any phase of the year as a 'maintenance program'… Every time they come in here I want them with the mentality to build strength."

As the Owls battle through their workout sessions and prepare for 2015, Scott's staff of two assistants and one grad assistant has helped the team with the physical and mental aspects of strength and conditioning. Brandon Washington returns, bringing his experience from SEC playing days and developing youth football programs in Atlanta. Joining Scott and Washington are Kevin Kroboth and Pat Boyle. Both are Temple grads and played under head coach Al Golden, making two bowl games and helping the program reach new standards. Both also have tremendous work ethic and provide mentoring for the new student-athletes. "The kids relate to that because they know they have been through it," said Scott. "They share the brotherhood of Temple football."

In the weight room, the clock ticks down to the opener against Penn State on September 5th. Scott has training camp to work with the team to prepare them for that Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. When that clocks hits zeroes, the Owls will be prepared to take on the Nittany Lions and perform this season. All their tests and achievements in the weight room will be carried into play as they look to make history.
