PHILADELPHIA - Temple senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich has been selected as the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week in recognition of his dominating performance in the Owl's 27-10 season opening win over Penn State.

Matakevich registered seven tackles and three sacks, which resulted in a net loss of 20 yards, against Penn State. He now has a total of 362 stops in his collegiate career, which is the most among active FBS players. A team captain and one of the most productive Temple players in recent team history, the 6-1, 232-pound senior was an All-Conference American Athletic Conference First Team selection last season.

Temple's defense as a whole limited Penn State to just 180 yards of offense and produced a league-record 10 sacks on quarterback Christian Hackenberg.

The Owls will begin American play when they travel to Nippert Stadium for a matchup with Cincinnati on Saturday. Kickoff for the nationally televised game on ESPNews is set for 8 p.m.
