Women's Soccer Soars Past Binghamton, 4-1

9.13.15 | Women's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. – Another impressive outing by the Temple women's soccer team gave them a perfect 2-0 weekend record and helped lead them over Binghamton, 4-1 on Sunday. The Owls move to 6-2-0 on the season.

The Owls once against started off strong, scoring in the 10th minute of the game. Freshman Sarah McGlinn was able slide a pass to senior Kelly Farrell, who tucked the ball into the net for a 21st birthday present and her eighth goal of the season. Farrell now leads the American Athletic Conference in goals scored, goals per game (1.143), and points (18).

In the 32nd minute of the game, senior Erin Lafferty lined up at the midfield line for a free kick. After sending the ball over the heads of everyone on the field, it took a hop behind Binghamton's Katie Hatziyianis and went directly into the left corner of the goal to give the Owls the 2-0 lead.

Binghamton pulled the score to 2-1 in the 61st minute, after Julianne Johnston broke free up the field and took a shot on goal. After freshman Jordan Nash saved but bobbled the shot, Johnston was able to rebound the ball into the left corner of the net.

Three minutes later, the Owls responded with their third goal of the game. After McGlinn was able to gather the ball, she slid it to Farrell who was able to kick it around to sophomore Elana Falcone. Falcone then easily sent the ball into the right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

The final Temple goal came in the 76th minute on a penalty kick. After Farrell was tripped up, Lafferty lined up for the PK and was able to send it into the right corner of the net to give the Owls the 4-1 lead. The goal gave Lafferty her fourth of the season and her second multi-goal game this season. Falcone and Lafferty are both tied for fifth in American Athletic Conference in goals scored.

After suffering two losses last weekend, head coach Seamus O'Connor believes minor things helped the girls focus on their two games from this week.

"Even though we played great soccer last weekend, the team started to doubt themselves. So as coaches, our job is to get that confidence back," said O'Connor. "We tweaked a couple of things formation wise and I think that gave the girls the confidence to play well."

The Owls will host their final non-conference matches, as they play city rival La Salle on Friday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m. and Saint Joseph's on Sunday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be held at Ambler Sports Complex.
