Women's Soccer Earns Victory Over La Salle, 3-0

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple women's soccer team earned their fifth shutout as they took down city rival La Salle, 3-0 on Friday. The win marked the Owls' first over the Explorers since 2002.
Temple got things off to a quick start offensively, when sophomore Elana Falcone crossed a pass to sophomore Gabriella McKeown. The ball was deflected by a La Salle defender but still ended up at McKeown's feet, who sent the shot into the net in the seventh minute. This was McKeown's first game back into action after she suffered an injury in the game against Lehigh.
The Owls then took a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute, after redshirt-sophomore Kayla Cunningham made a run with the ball and passed it off to freshman Sarah McGlinn. La Salle's goalkeeper Katie Getsinger was able to get her fingers on the ball, but McGlinn was able to power through to get her third goal of the season.
Temple closed out the scoring in the 74th minute of the game, when McKeown took a corner kick that landed at the feet of senior Kaylee Harner. Harner was able to send the ball in the direction of the net, where senior Erin Lafferty headed it in off the right post. Lafferty's goal earned her a total career-high five for the season.
Freshman Jordan Nash recorded a career-high six saves, including a best chance case scenario for La Salle near the left corner of the goal.
The win for Temple was not only big for the whole team but for the girls who have played their last match against their city rival.
"It's huge, it's absolutely huge. I told the seniors that I was so happy for them because it was the one thing we had against us that I didn't like," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We hadn't beaten La Salle in 13 years and our seniors have never beaten them. I told the other girls that we owe it to the seniors to win because they can't leave their careers without beating La Salle."
O'Connor also knows the win is important to the team because of the inspiration he pulled from them when became a coach at Temple in 2012.
"It means a lot to us because they've been the best team in the city for the longest time. There is a lot respect between both teams," said O'Connor. "When I first got to Temple, I said I wanted to be like La Salle. So I tried to copy as much as I could of what they did."
The Owls will be back in action on Sunday as they take on another city rival when Saint Joseph's comes to Ambler to wrap up non-conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Ambler Sports Complex.
