Matakevich, Thomas Earn American Athletic Conference Honors
9.14.15 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – For the second consecutive week, the American Athletic Conference has honored two Temple Owls for outstanding efforts on the gridiron. Senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 13 tackles and career-high two interceptions at Cincinnati, including a game-ending pick in the end zone to stop the Bearcats' final drive with 13 seconds remaining. Going back to the final week of 2014, this gives Matakevich three straight weeks with this honor, a school record dating back to joining the Big East in 1991.
Jahad Thomas appears on this list again, going from the Honor Roll to Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. His 100-yard kickoff return touchdown tied a program record and his 342 all-purpose yards set a new conference mark. Currently he leads all FBS players with 513 all-purpose yards through two games.
Matakevich and Thomas will look to continue their strong seasons as the Owls look for a 3-0 start as they face UMass at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff for the non-conference match-up is set for 3:00 p.m. on this Saturday.
