Women’s Tennis Opens Fall Season with Doubleheader Sweep

PHILADELPHIA – Coming off the best season in Temple history, the women's tennis team came up with two 7-0 wins over La Salle and Rider on Saturday.
"The girls came out really strong and it was a great way to start the season," said head coach Steve Mauro. "I'm really proud of the way they've been working at practice and everyone played strong in singles and doubles."
In the first match of the day against La Salle, the Owls were quick to clinch the doubles point. Minami Okajima and Anais Nussaume took down Madison Gillen and Cecile Johnson, 8-0 at the third flight. Dina Karina and Mariana Bedon then defeated Jayla Smith and Amanda Weiler, 8-0 at the second flight for the 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Owls had another strong showing, as four of the six flights were won in straight-set victories. Nussaume gave Temple a 2-0 lead after she defeated Jayla Smith, 6-0, 6-0 at the third flight. Alina Abdurakhimova started her sophomore campaign off strong as she took down Jade Smith, 6-1, 6-0 at the first flight. Yana Khon also earned a win at the second flight in a 6-3 6-0 win over Ally Santarelli to clinch the match for the Owls.
Karina, Bedon and Okajima won the fifth, fourth and sixth flights, respectively, in 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Against Rider, the Owls once again were quick to go up 1-0 on the Broncs as they clinched the doubles point. Okajima and Nussaume defeated Montana Morris and Aleesha Rouse, 8-0 at the third flight while Karina and Bedon took down Danielle Scrudato and Kelli Swanson, 8-0 at the second flight.
In singles play, Abdurakhimova gave the Owls a 2-0 lead after winning the first flight against Vanessa Canda, 6-1, 6-1. Nussaume followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the third flight and Khon wrapped up the match for Temple with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Scrudato at the second flight.
The Owls will travel to New Jersey next weekend to compete in the Princeton Invitational September 25-27.
