Owls’ Offensive Line Named to Joe Moore Award Quarterly Honor Roll

9.30.15 | Football, Kyle Friend - All-American Candidate

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls' offensive line earned a spot on the Joe Moore Quarterly Honor Roll for their excellent play through the month of September. Led by Rimington and Rotary Lombardi watch list member, senior center Kyle Friend, the front five have been key in the Owls' first 3-0 start since 2010. The offense averaged 34:19 of ball control in those games, good for 10th in the nation, while Jahad Thomas' 131.0 rushing yards per game is best in the American Athletic Conference and ninth-highest in the FBS. Sixteen schools made the Honor Roll; Temple and Navy are the only schools outside the Power Five conferences to be recognized. Temple also earned a spot on the Week 2 Honor Roll for their play in defeating preseason conference favorite Cincinnati on the road, 34-26.

According to the release, the Joe Moore committee selected because "Behind an offensive line that featured two converted defensive linemen in guards Shahbaz Ahmed and Brian Carter, Jahad Thomas rushed for a career-high 193 yards as the Owls defeated Cincinnati 34-26. As part of their strategy to slow down the up-tempo Bearcats, Temple held the ball for almost the entire 3rd quarter (13:00), scoring three touchdowns, including a 56-yard run by Thomas to give the Owls a 24-12 lead. In total, Temple rushed for 215 yards and averaged 6.0 yards per carry."

Named for Joe Moore, a legendary offensive line coached who spent two years at Temple during the 1980s, the Joe Moore Award Honor Roll includes units that display a high level of toughness, effort, teamwork, physicality, tone setting and finishing. Statistics, including those supplied by the universities (i.e. knockdowns), are used to support observations made about the technique and effort displayed in the game film. One unit will win the award at the season's end, the only major college football trophy to highlight a whole position group.

Temple will look to continue their strong play as they travel to Charlotte for a prime-time non-conference match-up. Kickoff on CBS Sports Network is set for 7:00 p.m. on October 2nd.
