PHILADELPHIA – Temple head football coach Matt Rhule has been named 2015 Sportsperson of the Year by CBS Philly.

In 2015, Rhule led his team to a school record tying 10-win regular season and an American Athletic East Division trophy. The Owls started the season a program-best 7-0, and were ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in 36 seasons. The Owls beat Penn State, 27-10, in the season opener, the first victory over the in-state rivals in 73 years. Ten Owls earned 2015 all-conference honors and senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich won the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards, given to the nation's best defensive player. Rhule was also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award and a semifinalist for the George Munger Award – each given annually to the nation's best college football coach – and won the prestigious Maxwell Club's Tri-State Coach of the Year.

Wrote CBS Philly's Joe Santoliquito, "When everyone else was losing, his team was winning. When the city's pro sports landscape looked like a spewing, bubbling quagmire, his program gave every sports-loving fan hope…."
