PHILADELPHIA – For Temple University, the football season continues!
Five members of the 2015 Owls who provided fans with one of the school's most memorable seasons, have been selected to play in college all-star games. In addition, all four teams remaining in the NFL playoffs provide Temple fans with an added reason to cheer.
This weekend, WR Robby Anderson and OL Kyle Friend will take the field. Anderson will play in the 91st East-West Shrine Game slated for Saturday, January 23, from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. ET and the game will air on NFL Network. Anderson will play for the East team led by Charlie Weis. Friend has been selected to play in the 2016 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. That game will also take place this Saturday from California State University Dominguez Hills' StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. ET) and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2. Friend's National squad is led by Mike Martz.
Next weekend, a trio of Owls will participate in the Reese's Senior Bowl on Saturday, January 30, in Mobile, Ala. DL Matt Ioannidis, LB Tyler Matakevich, and DB Tavon Young will play for the North team led by Dallas Cowboys' head coach Jason Garrett and his staff. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m. ET) on NFL Network. Leading up to the game, ESPN and NFL Network will provide live coverage of practices.
In addition to the college slate, the NFL will have a decided cherry flavor this weekend. Former Temple kicker Brandon McManus and his Denver Broncos teammates will face the New England Patriots on Sunday, January 24, at 1:05 p.m. MT (3:05 p.m. ET). That game will air on CBS. The late game pits former Temple head coach Bruce Arians' Arizona Cardinals against the Carolina Panthers. That game will be broadcast by FOX and will kickoff at 6:40 p.m. ET. Other former Temple alums with a stake in the game are:
Arizona Cardinals – Kevin Ross (cornerbacks coach; former Owl - Temple '84); Amos Jones (special teams coordinator; former Owls assistant coach); Nick Rapone (defensive backs coach; former Owls assistant coach); and Mark Dalton (VP of communications; Temple '89).
Carolina Panthers – Al Holcomb (linebackers coach; former Owls graduate assistant)
New England – Patrick Stewart (area scout; former Owls assistant director of football operations)
