Owls in the Super Bowl
1.25.16 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – When the Denver Broncos defeated the New England Patriots in yesterday's AFC Championship Game, it assured Temple University would be represented by a player in the Super Bowl for the third time in the last four years and nine of the 16 Super Bowls this century. The Broncos won, 20-18, with eight points coming from the leg of kicker Brandon McManus (Temple '13).
Temple players have been good for Denver QB Peyton Manning – or vice versa. The certain-to-be first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback is the NFL's all-time leader in every major passing category. Now in his 18th season, he is the oldest QB to lead a team to a Super Bowl. This will be his fourth time in the big game and each time he had an Owl by his side. When the Colts beat Chicago in SB-XLI he had Raheem Brock and Dan Klecko. Brock joined him again for SB-XLIV when the Colts lost to New Orleans. In SB-XLVIII when the Broncos lost to Seattle, Terrence Knighton played for Denver.
The Super Bowl is celebrating its 50th anniversary and will be played at Levi Stadium in San Francisco on February 7, at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on CBS. Overall 13 former Owls have played in the NFL's marquee game. Randy Grossman won all four that he played in for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Klecko won three championships with New England (2) and Indianapolis (1). Brock and James Parish were each in a couple. McManus will try to add to the 15 Super Bowl rings worn by Temple Owls.
For those Owl fans rooting for Carolina, who beat the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game, 49-15, their sideline boasts a less heralded Temple alum. Panthers' linebacker coach Al Holcomb was a graduate assistant with the Owls from 1995-96 under head coach Ron Dickerson.
