Women's Basketball Tops Tulane on the Road

1.26.16 | Women's Basketball

NEW ORLEANS -- The Temple women's basketball team used a 16-2 run late in the fourth quarter to cement victory, as the Owls topped Tulane on the road, 72-54 on Tuesday night. The win lifts Temple to 11-8 overall, 6-2 in The American, while Tulane moves to 15-6, 6-3 in conference play.

Temple led by 13 points after the first half, and then survived an 11-0 run from Tulane between the third and fourth quarters. Temple then used that one last surge to finish off the Green Wave on their home court.

Four Owls finished in double-figures in scoring, led by 22 from sophomore Alliya Butts. Classmate Tanaya Atkinson finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while junior Feyonda Fitzgerald had 12 points and five boards. Senior Erica Covile notched her third double-double of the season, and 12th of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Shooting numbers were even with both teams at 38%, but Temple out-rebounded Tulane, 45-40, and forced 23 Green Wave turnovers to take the win.

Temple grabbed the momentum midway through an action packed first quarter. With the score knotted at 16-16 the Owls closed the frame on a 10-2 run, as Butts and Covile connected from long-range, putting Temple on top, 26-18, after one.

Back-and-forth action highlighted the second frame, but Temple scored the final four points to extend the advantage to 37-24 at the half. Butts led all players with 10 points at the break, while Atkinson had nine and Covile, eight.

Tulane held slight edges in shooting percentage and rebounds, but Temple forced 17 turnovers from the Green Wave to account for the score differential at halftime.

Temple opened the third quarter by out-scoring the Green Wave, 19-13 to increase the advantage to 56-37. A closing surge from Tulane closed the gap, however, as the Green Wave put in seven unanswered to make it a 56-44 game after three.

Tulane continued their run with the first four points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 56-48. That was the last run Tulane would make, as Temple scored 11 unanswered points as part of a 16-2 run to put the game away.

Chinwe Duru led three Green Wave players in double figures, scoring 13 on the night, while Kolby Morgan and Meredith Schulte had 10 each.

The Owls play another game away from Philadelphia on Saturday, heading to East Carolina for Temple's first ever trip to play at ECU.
