Lacrosse's Nicole Tiernan Named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Team

1.27.16 | Women's Lacrosse

NEW YORK - By unanimous selection of the league's eight head coaches, Temple lacrosse senior Nicole Tiernan has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Tiernan received the same honor last year, and went on to earn BIG EAST First Team selection in 2015.

Tiernan led Temple with 35 goals as a junior, while also adding three assists for a team-best 38 total points. She was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week on March 10, following it with a second-straight weekly honor on March 17. Tiernan ranked fourth in the conference with 2.19 goals per game, and ranked second on the team and fifth in the BIG EAST with 36 draw controls. Her 14 free-position goals led all players in the league, and she recorded a total of six hat tricks to make it 10 for her career.

Temple has been picked to finish sixth of eight teams in the BIG EAST, which is how the Owls finished the 2015 season. Florida has been picked to repeat as champs, followed by UConn, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Villanova. Marquette and Cincinnati round out the preseason poll at seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Owls opened the 2015 season winning seven of their first eight before cooling off and finishing at 10-6 overall, but remained among the highest scoring teams in the league at 10.06 goals per game. Temple's top six scorers from last year return this season, as well as starting goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik.

The Gators, entering their second season in BIG EAST women's lacrosse action, earned six first-place votes to edge runner-up Connecticut in the poll. UConn's Lauren Kwasnowski was tabbed BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while Villanova's Jackie Froccaro was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

The Owls' season begins on Feb. 12 at home with a 3 p.m. game against Louisville. Temple will play a total of 12 home games, with eight of those being non-conference contests. The Owls open BIG EAST play at defending champ Florida on April 2.
