Men's Soccer Battles 110 Minutes for First Draw of the Season with Memphis, 0-0

PHILADELPHIA – In the Owls' first American Athletic Conference game at the Temple Sports Complex, a scoreless 110 minutes left Temple men's soccer and Memphis with its first draws of the season. The Owls ultimately outshout the Tigers 25-12, but could not get a ball through to the back of the net for the win. With the tie, the Owls now stand at 6-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.
Through the entirety of the double-overtime match, both teams hold strong defensively and saw scoring opportunities that continually fell just off target. Goalkeeper Alex Cagle was forced to make just four saves from the Tigers' 12 shots, including two during the second overtime period.
For Memphis goalkeeper Jake Leeker, the Owls' 26 shots saw only seven on target. Temple senior Matt Mahoney put Leeker to the biggest test in the first overtime period when a right-side cross came from Jorge Gomez Sanchez. Mahoney got a strong head on the ball and was headed straight for the back left corner of the net before Leeker made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
Mahoney put up seven shots personally, with numerous going just inches wide. Gomez Sanchez also posted seven shots with two being on target.
Scoring efforts were coming from numerous members of the Temple lineup, with defenders Mark Grasela and Carlos Moros Gracia both tallying three shots along with Joonas Jokinen. Jokinen came out to a strong start in the game with his three chances being posted within the first 27 minutes of the match.
Now standing at 0-1-1 record in the American Athletic Conference, the Owls will have their next chance for a conference victory on Oct. 8 against SMU in Dallas. Before that match, Temple hosts city-rival Villanova on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
Tuesday's game is set to be a white-out and students will receive a free t-shirt upon arrival to the Temple Sports Complex while supplies last.
