Men's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Road Matches at Columbia

10.10.16 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer is set to head out on its final road non-conference match of the season. The Owls are headed to Purchase, N.Y. to take on the Columbia Lions for a Tuesday-night game set to begin at 7:30 p.m. The match is being played at Manhattanville College due to construction of the Lions' field.

The Owls enter the match with an 8-3-1 overall record and a conference record of 1-1-1. Last week, the team posted two shutouts over Villanova and SMU to mark four consecutive shutouts, just one short of tying the program's all-time record of five consecutive. The win over SMU also marked Temple's first program win against the Mustangs in four meetings.

Both games ended with 1-0 finals off goals from Jorge Gomez Sanchez. The senior has posted 12 goals through 12 games and currently leads the nation in total goals and game-winning goals. For his efforts, Gomez Sanchez was named Co-Player of the Week by both the Conference and the Philadelphia Soccer Six.

Goalkeeper Alex Cagle has also been a driving force the Owls' success. He enters the eighth week of play following his third and fourth consecutive shutouts and an 11-save week. Cagle now boasts a goals against average of 0.58 that, if held, would take over the program's top mark for single-season goals against average by a fairly large margin. Nationally, the average ranks 19th among all ranked goalkeepers.

Cagle picked up his second straight week of Goalie of the Week honors from the Conference and Philadelphia Soccer Six for his efforts.

Zach Brown and Matt Mahoney were also recognized for their efforts in the past week of play. Brown was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week and Mahoney earned a spot on the Conference's Weekly Honor Roll.

The team is now one shutout away from matching the all-time program record for number of shutouts in a single season, which holds at nine.

The Matchup…
Tuesday's match will be the second all-time meeting between the Owls and the Lions. Last season, Temple welcomed Columbia to the Ambler Sports Complex to mark the first game between the two programs.  The Owls were able to come away with a 3-1 victory with goals from Hermann Doerner, Joonas Jokinen and Carlos Moros Gracia.

The Lions will enter the match with a 6-2-1 overall record and a 1-0-1 Ivy League record. Their last match was against the Penn Quakers and ended in a double-overtime victory for the Lions who took it 2-1.

Arthur Bosua is the Lions' leading scorer with four goals on the season.

The match will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network with subscription.
