Women’s Cross Country Earns Two Top 20 Finishes at American Cross Country Championship
10.29.16 | Women's Cross Country
Westchester Township, Ohio – Sophomore Katie Leisher and Freshman Millie Howard earned top-20 finishes in the women's 6K race at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship on Saturday. Leisher placed 14th out of 96 participants in a time of 21:23.8, earning herself all-conference honors. Howard came in at no. 20, finishing the race in 21:37.3.
"Millie did an amazing job today," said head Coach James Snyder. "She was able to move up from 30th to 20th place over th elast sevral meters of the course; her performance really stood out to me. I told Leisher that today she went from a pretender to a contender considering that at last year's conference meet, she placed in the high 60s."
Last year Leisher finished 63rd in just two minutes over this year's time.
"Last year was difficult for me," Leisher explained, "I struggled with adjusting to college life while trying to focus on cross country and sometimes I felt lost. However, with the help and support from Coach Snyder and my family I decided to dedicate more of myself to the sport. This year I have been putting in more effort than I did last year. I keep my trust in the training. I understand that nothing comes easy and that hardwork really pays off."
Overall, the squad finished eighth out of 11 teams, coming in ahead of Houston, USF, and East Carolina. SMU won the team title with three runners in the top 10. Anne-Marie Blaney from UCF won the individual title.
"Today Grace Moore collapsed about 200 meters from the finish line," said Snyder. "Which may have had a drastic impact on our score. Overall I believe that we have to get stronger and deeper as a team which falls not only on the coaching staff, but on the team as well. Today did not turn out the way we wanted it to, but we will work towards being heavy contenders at next year's conference championship which will be at our home course, Belmont Plateau."
The Owls will next compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals scheduled for Nov. 11.
