News and Notes Following Temple's 34-27 Loss to Memphis…
Temple has now played two road games and lost by identical 34-27 scores.
Five of Memphis' first seven possession ended three-and-outs. Those five drives resulted in 15 plays and nine yards. Conversely, Memphis's four touchdowns came on just two drives that totaled nine plays and 165 yards (the other two TDs came on a 23-yard INT return and a 95-yard KOR).
In three losses, Temple has allowed its opponents to start 10 drives in Temple territory. In three wins, that's happened just once.
Haason Reddick led the Owls with a career-high 11 tackles (8 solo), 5.0 TFLs and 2.0 sacks. Coming off American Athletic Conference defensive player of the week honors a week earlier, he outshined his winning performance. Reddick entered the game with a conference leading 7 TFLs and nearly doubled his output from the first five games. The redshirt senior tried to take the game into his own hands making each tackle on Memphis' first possession of the second half with three tackles for loss, including one sack.
Temple now has had six different players lead the team in tackles over the first six games. In contrast, last year Owls' LB Tyler Matakevich was the only FBS player to lead his team in tackles in every game of the season.
Senior QB Phillip Walker tied the school records for completions (36) and passing yards (445) and set the school mark with 59 attempts. Henry Burris held the record for passing yards (at Pittsburgh, 1996) and attempts (53, vs. Syracuse, 1994), while Devin Scott held the mark for attempts (vs. Rutgers, 1999).
Kicker Austin Jones, who injured his leg trying to make a tackle late in the game, saw his school record and NCAA leading streak of consecutive field goals made, reach 19 with successful 31 and 23 field goals. However, the streak came to an end when he missed a 43-yard attempt in the 3rd quarter.
Jones' injury led to freshman walk on Aaron Boumerhi getting his first taste of action with a successful PAT following the Owls' final touchdown.
Senior RB Jahad Thomas extended his streak of consecutive games with at least a pair of touchdowns to four – all four games he has played this season. This game, however, both TDs came through the air while the first three games they all came on the ground. Thomas also notched his second career 100-yard receiving day with 121 yards on six receptions. Thomas was the first Temple player to lead the team in both rushing (37) and receiving yards since October 2, a year ago when he did so at Charlotte.
Redshirt sophomore DL Michael Dogbe has started the last two games and has taken advantage of increased snaps. Dogbe was second on the team with a career-high 7 tackles, including 3.0 TFLs.
Redshirt sophomore Brodrick Yancy has become a go-to receiver for Walker. He entered the game with 10 catches and nearly doubled that total with a career-high 9 receptions and 88 yards.
Redshirt senior TE Colin Thompson has made just two catches on the season but has made them count. Both have gone for first downs, including his 10-yard reception in last night's game that came on 4th-and-3 and led to the Owls' first touchdown.
Redshirt senior DL Praise Martin-Oguike entered the game with an NCAA-leading nine forced fumble and added one to that total. Martin-Oguike had a strip sack of QB Riley Ferguson in the second quarter.
