PHILADELPHIA – On Saturday, Temple women's cross country competed at the 9th annual Jack St. Clair Invitational honoring long-time Temple cross country coach, Jack St. Clair. The squad finished fourth overall out of 17 teams.
Graduate student Emily Nist was the top finisher for the Owls at Belmont. In her first race for Temple coming off of injury, she finished the rigorous 6k course in 25:20.1, earning 10th place. Nist spent her first college seasons at Syracuse University and came to Temple upon graduation to finish out her eligibility.
"I have been looking forward to getting back into competition and helping the team out," says Nist. "I'm glad I was able to get out here today and find my place with the team. The Belmont course is very challenging because of all the hills, but I was able to pace myself by mentally breaking the race into three sections."
Junior Katie Pinson was the next finisher for Temple at 25:47.6. Sophomore Brianna Thomas (26.27.5) and Junior Erica Groomes (27:22.6) followed behind in 26h and 38th places, respectively.
"We are at the point in our season where we have a clearly defined top three runners," says head coach James Snyder. "We are still trying to figure out who our number four and number five runners will be and I believe that Emily and Katie did a good job of keeping themselves in that conversation today. As a middle distance runner in our track & field-cross country program, I think Erica did a great job for never having run in a cross country meet before. She came out today in her first race and competed relatively well."
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action next Saturday at the Leopard Invitational hosted by Lafayette University, leaving the Owls one meet closer to the American Athletic Conference Championship.
"Lafayette will be our last race before the conference meet and we plan to run our entire roster," says Snyder. "There, we will decide which seven or eight runners we will take to the conference championship to compete and I am looking forward to it."
