Women’s Soccer Falls to SMU 2-1 in Dallas

10.9.16 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer falls to the SMU Mustangs on Sunday afternoon, 2-1. Temple drops to 3-11, 0-4 on the season while the Mustangs advance to 9-3-1, 3-0-1.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first half as Temple sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash saved three shots at the half on the nine she faced.

The Mustangs were quick out of the gate as they were able to net the match's first goal during the 47th minute of play. Mustang leading scorer Allie Thornton received a pass from Jessica Cooley and Thornton scored with a shot in the upper near-side corner from inside the 18.

SMU scored its second goal during the 64th minute when Claire Oates took a pass from Haley Thompson to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Oates netted the ball past Nash off of a rebound.

Temple was fast to follow. Just 24 seconds later, redshirt-junior Kayla Cunningham took a pass from junior Elana Falcone to cut the deficit to one. Falcone brought the ball up the middle of the field, fed it to Cunningham inside the 18 and Cunningham blasted a shot in the far-side lower corner.

On the day, Nash finished with seven saves and two goals against on 19 shots faced. Offensively, the Owls had nine shots with the lone goal.

One notable change for the Owls today that head coach Seamus O'Connor was very please with was freshmen Emily Keitel and Molly Tobin starting at center back.

"It was something new for us," O'Connor said. "The two freshmen did a really, really good job."

With facing a top team in the conference, O'Connor was pleased with the way his team performed today, citing how well the defense played.

"I'm very proud of the way the ladies performed," O'Connor said. "It was a very good SMU team. We got stronger and stronger as the game went on. We created many quality chances and limited them the very few quality chances."

Temple is back in action this Thursday October 13 as they host the USF Bulls for a 3:30 match at the Temple Sports Complex. As always, the game with be aired on OwlsTV.
