Volleyball Sweeps Houston on the Road

11.4.16 | Women's Volleyball

HOUSTON -- The Temple volleyball team won its fifth-straight match and its ninth-straight road match, earning a 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-22, 15-15) at Houston on Friday night. The Owls improve to 17-6 overall, 10-3 in conference play, while the Cougars fall to 5-19, 0-13.

Temple held Houston's offense at bay, as the Cougars hit just .139. The Owls out-blocked (7-4), out-dug (59-57) and out-hit Houston to finish with a 2-0 record against the Cougars this year.

Temple junior Irem Asci topped the Owls with 14 kills, while senior Tyler Davis had nine and junior Izzy Rapacz added seven kills, 11 digs, and three blocks. Sophomore Iva Deak ended her night with six kills, hitting .357, tying Rapacz for match-high honors with three blocks. Junior Janine Simmons ended her night with two kills on five swings, with a pair of blocks.

Junior Kyra Coundourides tallied 26 assists on the night, also picking up three kills without a miscue. She added nine digs and three aces in the win. Sophomore Mia Heirakuji topped Temple with 15 digs, while junior Dara Peric and Asci each added seven.

Houston led early in the first set, going up 8-4. Temple battled back to tie things at 14-14 on a kill from Deak and a Rapacz ace, before going up 16-14 on a Davis block. The Owls continued to roll, all in all a 9-1 run to lead 21-15. From there, Houston answered with six-straight points, tying the match at 21-21. A Houston service error gave Temple the serve, but the match was tied three more times, including a 25-25. The Owls were able to close out the frame, however, as an Asci kill and a Houston attack error put Temple up, 1-0.

Temple led 5-2 in set two, before Houston cut the advantage to 6-5. Both teams had runs in the middle of the set, including a 6-2 surge that gave the Owls a 20-16 lead. The Cougars countered with five-straight to go up 21-20 before a service error tied things at 21-21. From there, Temple ended the set on a 4-1 run, to win 25-22, going up 2-0 in the match.

The Owls had a 5-1 advantage in set three, before Houston battled back to make it a two-point set at 12-10. From there, Temple used a 10-2 run to open up a 22-12 lead. Davis and Rapacz each tallied two kills during the surge. Houston was unable to get closer than a nine-point deficit down the stretch and the Owls won it on a Davis kill.

Temple next heads to Tulane to take on the Green Wave on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Owls will look to avenge an earlier 3-2 loss to the New Orleans foes.
