Women's Basketball Wins Third-Straight; Owls Top Rutgers

12.17.16 | Women's Basketball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Temple played lock-down second-half defense, allowing Rutgers just 11 points in the final 20 minutes, as the Owls' women's basketball team grabbed a 48-37 win over the Scarlet Knights. The victory, which moves Temple to 7-3 overall, was the first for the Owls over Rutgers since the 2010-11 season.

After trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half, Temple turned the tides on Rutgers beginning in the third quarter. The Scarlet Knights shot just 12.5% and Temple forced eight turnovers in the frame, to propel the Owls to the victory. The 35 points that Temple allowed was the best defensive effort for the cherry and white since a 55-35 win over SMU at home on February 3, 2016.

Senior Feyonda Fitzgerald led all players with 19 points, while tying a career-high with six steals. Junior Donnaizha Fountain had 15 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Tanaya Atkinson tallied eight points with seven boards. Ruth Sherrill led Temple to a 48-37 edge on the glass, including a 20-11 advantage in the second half, pulling down a team-best nine rebounds.

Rutgers opened with an 11-2 run that took up the first five minutes of the frame. Temple responded with a 5-0 surge to make it 11-7 on a free throw from Fitzgerald with 3:05 on the clock. From there, Rutgers scored four of the next five points, taking a 15-8 lead after one. Temple was 0-for-7 from beyond-the-arc in the quarter.

Another extended Rutgers run opened the second, as the Scarlet Knights connected on two threes to push the lead to 23-10. From there, Temple countered with an 8-3 run, with four each from Fitzgerald and Atkinson, making it 26-18 at the break.

Temple shot just 27.6% from the field in the first half, including going 0-for-9 from three. Fitzgerald led the Owls with nine points, while Atkinson had five points and five rebounds. Rutgers make 37.9% from the field, including going 4-of-6 (66.7%) from beyond-the-arc.

Temple's defense stepped up in the third quarter, holding Rutgers to just seven points in the frame. Meanwhile on offense, the Owls shot 47.1% (8-17), including making both three attempts to take a 39-33 lead.

The Owls closed out the game with a 9-4 fourth quarter run to set the final to 48-37.

Temple is back in action on Thursday, hosting Fairfield at McGonigle Hall at 2:00 p.m.
