Women's Basketball Tops Vermont

12.4.16 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team allowed a season-low 39 points, picking up a 54-39 victory over visiting Vermont on Sunday. The win improves the Owls to 4-2 overall, while the Catamounts drop to 3-5 on the season.

Vermont shot just 27.5% (14-51) in the game, while Temple forced a season-high 23 total turnovers.  The Owls nabbed over half of their points (27) from the bench, and also held a slim 41-38 edge on the glass.

Juniors Alliya Butts and Donnaizha Fountain tied for game-high honors with 16 points and three steals each, with Fountain contributing a team-high nine rebounds.  Senior Feyonda Fitzgerald filled out her stat line with six points, seven assists, five boards, and a pair of steals. Senior Ruth Sherrill chipped in with four points and six rebounds, while freshman Shantay Taylor notched four points with five boards. Rounding out the box score, rookie Shannen Atkinson had four points and four rebounds, while senior Safiya Martin recorded three blocks.

The teams combined for just 14 first-quarter points, and after a 5-2 Temple lead on a Butts three, it was all Vermont. The Catamounts scored seven-straight to end the frame with a 9-5 advantage. Temple shot just 12.5% (2-16), while Vermont was barely better, shooting 25% (3-12).

Temple's offense returned to form in the second quarter, shooting 41.2%, rattling off a 9-0 run, while also not committing a foul in 10 minutes. The opening surge was sparked by five points from Fountain and four from Taylor as the Owls opened up a 16-9 lead. It took Vermont over five minutes to find the basket in the second, but they countered with five-straight to make it a 16-14 game. Temple was able to re-gain a cushion down the stretch, closing the half on a 7-3 run to lead 23-17.

Fountain led the Owls with seven points, five boards, and two steals in the first half, while Butts netted six points, and Taylor had four points and four rebounds.

After Vermont cut it to 25-21 early in the third, Temple's offense clicked. The Owls rattled off runs of 10-2 and 8-0, opening their largest lead of the game 43-26. Temple's surges gave them a 17-point advantage, and while Vermont was able to score the final points of the frame, the Owls led 43-28 after three.

A three from Vermont opened the fourth quarter, but Temple put together an 8-3 run to lead 51-34 with 2:23 left in the frame. The final Owl surge put the game out of reach for Vermont, despite the Catamounts closing the game by scoring five of the final seven points.

Vermont was led by 11 points and six rebounds from Candice Wright, while Lauren Handy added seven points.

Temple is back in action on Wednesday, playing at Hampton at 5:30 p.m.
