Lacrosse Holds Tough in 8-5 Loss to #16 Louisville
2.12.16 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - Temple lacrosse made it a game with two goals in the final minutes, but ultimately the Owls fell short in their season opener with an 8-5 loss to #16 Louisville. Four different players scored for Temple, led by senior Rachel Schwaab with two goals.
"We knew that they would be a really strong team, and they were a tough one to prepare for," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "They have a ton of strength in their offensive end and off their draws. We had every possible crazy thing happen in the game in terms of some rule situations and yellow cards, so we saw everything in this first game. I was proud of the effort we gave, but we still look at it a bit as a missed opportunity. We looked like it was our first game and they looked like it was their second game."
The Cardinals did open their season last week, and now improve to 2-0 while Temple stands at 0-1. Louisville's Kaylin Morissette recorded a hat trick with three goals along with an assist, while Hannah Koloski and Cortnee Daley each scored twice for the Cardinals.
The Owls managed only a single goal in a slow first half, tying the score at 1-1 on a Nicole Tiernan goal in the seventh minute. From there, Louisville closed the half on a 4-0 run for a 5-1 halftime advantage.
After Louisville scored again to start the second half, Temple matched the Cardinals the rest of the way and ended up out-scoring them 4-3 in the period. Louisville's 7-2 lead stood for almost 14 minutes before the Owls put three goals in the net in the final five minutes.
Anna Frederick gathered a loose ball and scored with 4:57 remaining, but the Cardinals answered just 13 seconds later. Morgan Glassford started another push for Temple with a goal at 3:29, and also assisted on the final goal by Schwaab with 1:15 left.
The game was a physical one with a total of six yellow cards, five of those given to Louisville including one at the outset on a stick violation. The Cardinals finished with a 24-15 edge in total shots, but the Owls had a 10-9 advantage in the second half.
Next up for Temple is a 3 p.m. home game against city rival La Salle on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
