STORRS, Conn.- In a perfect weekend sweep, the Temple men's tennis team defeated the UConn Huskies, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Owls move to 6-1 overall in the spring season, coming on a six-match winning streak since losing to Belmont on January 16. Temple also moves to 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play after defeating East Carolina on Saturday.
"The guys stepped up again today against another tough conference opponent. We were short-handed today at the first flight due to an injury, but a few of the freshmen and senior Nicolas Paulus, who had a great match at the second flight today," said head coach Steve Mauro. "The guys are working hard; it's great to have two wins against tough conference opponents. We're really happy with the direction that team is going, we hope to keep working hard and keep improving."
As they did against the Pirates, the Owls were quick to go up 1-0 on the Huskies after clinching the doubles point. Florian Mayer and Uladzimir Dorash defeated Hank Hill and Jonathan Edwards, 6-2 at the third flight, while Paulus and Artem Kapshuk took down Zac McEntee and Arnaud Valentin, 6-4 at the second flight.
In singles play, Temple jumped out to a 2-0 lead over UConn, after Kapshuk defeated Justin Warren, 6-1, 6-1 at the first flight. Christopher Toner added the first point to board for the Huskies, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the third flight over Mayer.
However, the Owls would win at the second flight, with Paulus defeating Jacob Spreyer, 6-2, 7-5, marking his 60th career singles victory at Temple. Dorash would then clicnh the win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hill at the fourth flight. Filip Stipcic added the final point for the Owls, defeating McEntee, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the sixth flight.
The Owls will stay on the road for their next match, as they travel to Greensburg, Pa. to face Youngstown State on February 20.
