Temple Student-Athletes Hear From Terrific Female Role Models at NGWSD Event
2.26.16 | General
PHILADELPHIA - On February 25, all of Temple's student-athletes were treated to an inspiring event in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Three panelists, all of them strong female role models with athletic backgrounds, came to speak to the entire student-athlete population at Pearson-McGonigle Hall. The speakers were Mary McElroy, Temple's Executive Senior Associate AD/SWA, Dr. Amy J. Goldberg, Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and Natasha Hastings, an Olympic gold medalist in track & field.
With McElroy serving as moderator, each of the three gave some background information on themselves before opening up the floor to questions.
The theme of this year's NGWSD is Leading the Way, a nod to all those individuals and organizations who are on the frontline for girls and women in sports: the organizations committed to advancing women's issues, athletes who have overcome barriers, coaches who challenge their teams to succeed, girls who have faith in their own potential and all those who continue to use the power of example to inspire greatness.
Many important topics and issues were covered by the panelists, thanks to thoughtful questions from many of the Owls' student-athletes. The advice given by the panelists was extremely meaningful for all student-athletes, and women in particular. Among many other things, they talked about mental strength and how the mind can both help and hurt you, about loving your teammates in order to truly experience success, about handling adversity and finding a way to release your energy in a way that's positive, and about loving yourself and accepting your shortcomings in order to move on.
While McElroy is an administrator in Temple Athletics, the other two speakers were honored guests thanks to connections within the department. Hastings is an Under Armour athlete and able to take time out of her schedule with the help of Temple's Under Armour representative, Brian Swatek. Dr. Goldberg, a one-time field hockey player at Penn, had a prior connection to Temple lacrosse head coach Bonnie Rosen, who has had Dr. Goldberg speak to her student-athletes in the past. All three panelists were truly able to speak to the power of sports in building character and setting you up for life-long success.Â
More information on NGWSD and biographies of the three panelists is available by clicking the flyer link below. Also available is a video produced by OwlsTV, who was on hand to cover the event and interview both Hastings and Sydnee Jacques of the women's track & field team.
