Lacrosse Runs Past Rutgers for Sixth-Straight Victory
3.9.16 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA -- Senior Rachel Schwaab notched a six-point game as the Temple lacrosse team made it six in a row with a 16-9 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Owls move to 6-1 overall, including a 6-0 mark at home, while Rutgers dips to 1-6.
Schwaab led a Temple attack that broke a 1-1 tie with three straight goals early in the first half and did not trail the rest of the way. The senior finished with four goals and a pair of assists, while seniors Brenda McDermott, Megan Tiernan, and Avery Longstaff all added two goals and one assists in the victory.
"Today was a really great step in our season," said head coach Bonnie Rosen. "I knew that they were going to be a tough team and to come away with the win was great."
Senior Nicole Tiernan added three points, while sophomore Nicole Barretta also had a multi-point game for the Owls. Junior Morgan Glassford helped Temple to a 16-11 advantage in draw controls, finishing the afternoon with six. Senior Jaqi Kakalecik got the win in goal, recording seven saves.
"We battled through some things today that were more difficult than we've seen in the last few games," added Rosen. "But we beat a great team, one that required us to step up our game in every area, so it was a win-win."
The teams traded goals to open the game before a three-goal surge put the Owls on top 4-1. Nicole Tiernan, McDermott, and Schwaab connected for Temple during the run. Rutgers countered, scoring three out of the next four goals to cut the Temple lead to 5-4. However, a 3-1 run for the Owls, including goals from Kirstie Connor, Megan Tiernan, and Anna Frederick sent the team into the break with an 8-5 advantage.
The Owls stretched their lead to 11-5 in the first three minutes of the second half, as Schwaab, Megan Tiernan, and Longstaff all tallied for Temple. From there, Rutgers got no closer than a four-point deficit, as Temple out-scored the Scarlet Knights 8-4 in the frame, including the final three goals of the game from Glassford, Schwaab, and Barretta.
Temple is next in action at home on Saturday, hosting cross-town rival Saint Joseph's at 1:00 p.m. at Geasey Field.
