PHILADELPHIA- After honoring its lone senior, the Temple women's tennis team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at TU Pavilion. The Owls moved to 10-4 overall on the season.
Doubles play was a sweep for Temple, as Alina Abdurakhimova and Minami Okajima, the team's only senior, defeated Liza Ranchenko and Sabrina Helm, 6-1 at the third flight. Anais Nussaume and Yana Khon clinched the point for the Owls with a 6-2 win at the second position over Nicole Chis and Katarina Pavlovic, while Dina Karina and Monet Stuckey-Willis also picked up a 7-6 (5) victory at the first flight.
In singles, Okajima gave the Owls a 2-0 advantage with a shutout straight-set victory at the sixth flight, while Abdurakhimova grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chis at the first flight. Stuckey-Willis clinched the win for the Owls on a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the third flight.
The Knights' only point came after Shreya Pasricha defeated Marian Bedon, 6-2, 6-1 at the fourth flight. The Owls added a final point when Karina took down Pavlovic at the fifth flight, 6-1, 6-1.
"It was a great win today for the girls, especially having played inside yesterday and having to come outside. They came out and played extremely strong in both singles and doubles," said head coach Steve Mauro. "I'm especially happy for Minami who was the lone senior being represented today. She's had a great career for us, she's been a pleasure to coach and I expect great things from her in the future."
The Owls will be back in action when they host UMES on April 15 at 8:00 a.m. at TU Pavilion.
