PHILADELPHIA – The Washington Redskins selected Temple defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis (Ringoes, N.J.) in the 5th round of the 2016 National Football League Draft on Saturday afternoon.
Ioannidis was the 152nd selection in the 2016 NFL Draft and the 13th pick of the 5th round. He joins WR Josh Doctson, LB Su'a Cravens, and CB Kendall Fuller as a new members of the Redskins.
Ioannidis joins a list of recent Temple defensive linemen to make it to the NFL in the last 15 years joining Raheem Brock ('02), Dan Klecko ('03), Terrence Knighton ('09), and Muhammad Wilkerson ('11). The two-time captain helped lead the Owls to a school record 10 wins and a Top 25 ranking for the first time in 36 years. As a senior, he earned first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors starting all 14 games and registering 42 tackles, 11.5 TFLs, and 3.5 sacks.
"Matt transformed into a great leader for us," said head coach Matt Rhule. "He learned the history of success that Temple had at the defensive line position and made himself into one of the best that's ever played here."
Ioannidis is the 65th Temple football player to be drafted into the NFL and the second Owl selected in the 2016 draft - DB Tavon Young was selected by the Ravens earlier today. They are the first Temple players drafted since 2012 when Bernard Pierce (Baltimore), Evan Rodriguez (Chicago) and Tahir Whitehead (Detroit) were selected.
Ioannidis joins Cody Booth (Washington), Jaiquan Jarrett (New York Jets), Kamal Johnson (Washington), Terrance Knighton (New England), Brandon McManus (Denver), Bernard Pierce (Jacksonville), Rod Streater (Kansas City), Martin Wallace (Chicago), Tahir Whitehead (Detroit), Muhammad Wilkerson (New York Jets), and Young (Washington) as former Owls currently active in the NFL.
