4.7.16 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - After a near-upset of the second ranked team in the nation, Temple lacrosse returns home Saturday to face BIG EAST foe Vanderbilt (4-7, 0-2) at 1 p.m. The Owls (8-3, 0-1) are currently receiving consideration in both the Inside Lacrosse Top 20 Media Poll and the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Women's Top 20.
In the Owls' BIG EAST opener at #2 Florida last Saturday, they nearly pulled off the upset but fell by just a single goal, 10-9. Two of the Owls' three losses have come to teams ranked in the IWLCA Top 20, with the other being against #16 Louisville on Feb. 12 by a score of 8-5. The Owls won seven in a row after that loss to Louisville, their longest win streak in 14 years, before falling 10-4 to Delaware on March 16. In its final non-conference game on March 26, Temple recorded an 18-3 blowout win against Cal. Three Owls recorded hat tricks in the win, led by senior Megan Tiernan with three goals and an assist. Temple has won six games by 10 or more goals. The Owls' 19-goal effort in a 19-9 win at UMBC was the most since a 19-3 win over Cincinnati in 2014.Â
Senior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik, who has played every minute in the cage this season for Temple, has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. Her goals-against average of 6.55 ranks sixth among all players in NCAA Division I, while her saves percentage of .497 ranks 14th nationally. Seniors Megan Tiernan and Rachel Schwaab have combined for an impressive 67 total points this season, leading the way for the Owls' offense. Tiernan has 22 goals and 11 assists, while Schwaab has tallied 21 goals and 13 assists.
Tiernan has notched five hat tricks already this season, while Schwaab has three. Senior Kirstie Connor ranks third on the team with 17 goals after recording a hat trick against Florida, and senior Brenda McDermott is fourth in goals with 15 but third in total points with 27. McDermott recorded two goals and an assist at Florida, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Junior Morgan Glassford, twice named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll already this season, has scored 13 goals to rank fourth on the team, and her 55 draw controls lead the Owls and rank fourth all-time in a single season at Temple. Her 5.40 draws per game lead all players in the BIG EAST and rank 10th in the country.
Temple's 13.27 goals per game rank 15th in the nation, while the Owls rank fifth among all teams in Division I in scoring defense (6.55) and scoring margin (6.73).
The Owls and the Vanderbilt Commodores are tied 1-1 all-time. Vanderbilt won last year's meeting 14-8 in the first conference match-up between the programs, while the Owls won 20-7 back in 1996 in a non-conference game. Vanderbilt is coming off five straight losses, including a 16-2 defeat at #2 Florida.
