Temple Student-Athletes Continue Academic Success with Record Spring GPA
5.19.16 | General
PHILADELPHIA - Temple University's student-athletes continue to set records where it matters - in the classroom. For the ninth straight semester the University's 19 varsity sport teams combined for a cumulative semester grade point average above a 3.00 with the 2016 spring semester setting a new record for excellence with a combined 3.23 GPA. It is the fifth straight spring semester GPA increase for Temple student-athletes.
"This has been one of the best years for Temple University Athletics, and there is no better way to cap it off than a record where it matters most," said Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "Congratulations to our student-athletes, for all of their hard work done, and also to the staff at the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes led by Justin Miller. I am so incredibly proud of this accomplishment."
A record 67.6 percent of all Temple student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or greater for the spring semester. Thirty-two student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs for the semester with a record 160 student-athletes (35.2%) earning GPAs at 3.5 or greater.
Fifteen teams earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or greater while for the first time all 19 sports achieved GPAs above a 2.85. Men's Tennis (3.58), Women's Cross Country (3.56) and Field Hockey (3.56) posted the highest semester GPAs while 11 teams earned semester GPAs above a 3.33.
"2015-2016 was a landmark academic year for Temple's student-athletes.  This spring's record breaking performance is a product of an effective collaboration from the entire University community - from faculty and staff, coaches, the Athletics Department and the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, " said Miller, the Senior Director of the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes. "The student-athletes deserve all the credit for their earned success, but challenging and supporting them day in and day out is the amazing staff of the Resnick Center.  Collectively we continue to reach new academic heights and we look forward to more excellence in the future."
Fourteen teams ended the 2015-16 academic year with cumulative GPAs above a 3.00 with Lacrosse (3.51), Women's Soccer (3.51) and Men's Tennis (3.33) leading the way. Eleven Temple teams saw an increase in their cumulative GPA from last spring.
The previous semester record occurred in the spring 2015 semester when Temple student-athletes earned a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
