NCAA Career in Sports Forum Recap - Avery Ellis
6.16.16 | Football, General
From June 2-5, three Temple student-athletes were among the 200 across the nation invited to attend the 2016 NCAA Career in Sports Forum. Football's Avery Ellis, fencing's Kristen Kemnitzer and lacrosse's Brooke Williams all wrote about their experiences for OwlSports.com. Our third and final recap is courtesy of Ellis, a rising redshirt senior for the Owls' football team.
The 2016 NCAA Career in Sports Forum was an exuberant experience to say the least. Throughout the four days and three nights I was able to create everlasting friendships with many, and a strong rapport with all student-athletes I came into contact with. Having the opportunity to be in a room with 200 elite student-athletes on and off the playing fields has truly transformed my career outlook for the better. Entering the forum, I had a preconceived notion that we were going to learn about the autonomy of the NCAA. However, it was so much more than panel speakers and group work. The Career in Sports Forum was a life-changing experience that allowed us student-athletes to network with current and future athletic directors, coaches, and NCAA personnel.
The most impactful day was the second day there, where we received our DiSC assessments. The DiSC assessment is a personality test based off of a series of questions which one answers beforehand. The D in DiSC stands for a dominating personality, which puts emphasis on shaping an environment by overcoming opposition to accomplish results. The i stands for influence which puts emphasis on shaping the environment by persuading others. The c stands for conscientiousness which emphasizes consistency in existing circumstances. Finally, the s stands for steadiness which emphasizes cooperating with others to carry out a task. When I finally received my results, I was confident that I was an s. However, I was actually an i. At first I completely disagreed with the assessment and believed that there had to be some sort of mistake. Nevertheless, as I finally took the time to read and go over the actual traits of an i it described me to perfection. The assessment also mentioned how i's tend to get along with other i's and the closest relationships I made at the forum had been with other i's.
There were many speakers, but one captured my attention more than the others. His name was Clyde Doughty, Jr., the athletic director of Bowie State University. He gave a presentation titled "The Moment," which explained how so often we get tangled up thinking about our past and our future instead of focusing on the now. He helped me understand that as long I focus on the current moment, my now, that I will have a better grasp on my past and a better understanding of where I'm going. It is far too often that we tend to think about what's next rather than giving our full effort on what is current. Therefore, if we give our full effort to the now, the future will become a less of an uncertainty and more of a promise. Â
