PHILADELPHIA – Athletic fields for Temple University's field hockey and lacrosse teams will be named Howarth Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa Howarth and her husband, Greg. Howarth Field will be part of Temple's new sports complex under construction south of campus at Broad St. and Girard Ave.
"The Howarths' passion for Temple University is evident in all they do," said Temple University's Director of Athletics Patrick Kraft. "Their support for our student-athletes, their leadership in the Owl Club and their unwavering support of university priorities is an inspiration to all of us. We are deeply grateful for this special gift."
Temple Athletics will use the Howarths' donation to complete construction on the field hockey and lacrosse field at the new Temple sports complex. Plans include bleacher seating, a press box and new locker room facilities. The donors hope their gift will position Howarth Field as a first-class venue nationally. Other sports to be housed at the complex include men's and women's soccer, women's track and field, and men's and women's cross country.
"We hope our giving inspires others to give, whether to field hockey, athletics, or to some other passion they hold," said Cherifa Howarth. "Temple is an extraordinary and diverse place. We hope others will be inspired to express and support their passions as we have supported ours."
The new sports complex will open this fall, and is one of a number of new and renovated facilities designed to enhance the experience of Temple student-athletes. Other recent projects include expansion of the Resnick Academic Support Center, locker room renovations, and renovation of McGonigle Hall.
"Outstanding facilities are essential to the cultivation of exceptional athletic programs," said Kraft. "I know the student-athletes, coaches and fans join me in thanking Cherifa and Greg Howarth for their significant investment and the positive impact their generosity will have on our programs in the years ahead."
